MEC Lehari expresses confidence on the commitment of his Dept essential service officers

North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari expressed confidence on law enforcement officers who will continue working during the President’s announcement of the 21 days lockdown.

According to Lehari, the Department will avail all necessary resources to ensure increased visibility of traffic and police in all major roads across the Province.

Speaking in a meeting with senior management of the Department, MEC Lehari emphasized the importance of the Department’s compliance to the President’s announcement.

“Our contribution as the Department is key and we are required to utilize all our available resources and further give support to our officers who will be on duty.

This will serve to ensure that travelling in our roads is safe as well as encourages compliance by the few motorists who will be allowed to travel due to the nature of their work or service,” said MEC.

He said the current situation might be frustrating, however, it is a necessary measure as the President outlined in his address to the nation when he declared the lockdown.

“Therefore we must support our officers who will be on duty and not be able to remain home. They risk making contacts with travellers who may have contracted the virus and spreading it. Surely your commitment to protect and serve the nation during this critical time of disaster is a demonstration of your level of patriotism and compassion. We applaud them and are confident that they will keep our communities safe from contracting or spreading the virus further,” said MEC Lehari.

The Department is part of the Provincial Disaster Management Command Centre that was established by the Premier to prepare the state of readiness for the Province in containing the spread of Covid-19.

In compliance with the President’s pronouncement, the Department has put measures in place to ensure that all Registering Authorities (RA’s) and Driver License Testing Centres (DLTCs) are closed during this period. However, the South African Post Office and Registering Authorities will be open for motor vehicle licence renewals only.
